guide and information
August 2008 sees the 12th annual Surrey League Revolutions 5-day cycle race taking
place in Surrey and East and West Sussex.
Around 100 of Britain's top riders will be taking part in the gruelling 5 day long race.
Each day they will cover around 100 miles - as well as climbing some of the steepest hills
in South East England.
Starting on Friday
15th August, each day sees the participants racing on circuits in different parts of the
Region. This year's route revisits some of the favourite spots from previous years such as
the South Downs at Goodwood and the Ashdown Forest.
- Day 1 - Friday 15th August, is
based on Staplefield in Sussex. HQ: Handcross Village Hall. Start
Time 12:00.
Lots of dragging hills on 'dead' roads, but nothing that requires ultra-small gears
- if you are fit!
- Day 2 - Saturday 16th August,
is based on Loxwood in Sussex. HQ: North Hall, Loxwood. Start Time
12:00.
Rolling Surrey and Sussex roads. Fast and fairly wide apart from the odd narrow
bridge and the possibility of horses. No problem!
- Day 3 - Sunday 17th August, is
based on Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit near Chichester in West Sussex, where the HQ will
be.
The day starts with a time trial around Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit. Start Time
11:00.
This will be followed by a road race
starting and finishing on the Motor Racing Circuit, but also using the roads outside the
circuit up and down the South Downs. Start Time 13:00.
More dragging hills but with the bonus of SEVEN miles of downhill between Harting
Hill and Lavant, to be covered TWICE. I must be getting soft!
- Day 4 - Monday 18th August, is
based on Wivelsfield and Barcombe in Sussex. HQ: Beechwood Hall, Cooksbridge.
Start Time 12:00.
More rolling Sussex roads. The first few miles are quite narrow and mainly
uphill, after that it gets easy. Lots of 'dead' roads - very tiring.
- Day 5 - Tuesday 19th August, is
based at Crowborough and the Ashdown Forest in East Sussex. HQ All Saints Parish
Hall, Crowborough. Start Time 12:00.
You will need you climbing rears today. Crowborough and The Wall are steep
and both are over a mile long. Kingstanding is steep at the bottom. Not a year
of flat on the whole race. A wonderful day on the bike!
The riders will be racing for the
coveted leader's yellow jersey which will be worn by the race leader every day. They will
also be competing in 'hot spot' sprints along the route and trying to be first over the
hills to take the title 'King of the Mountains'.
Previous winners of the event have gone on to represent England & Ireland in World
Championships, the Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Last year's 380 mile long race was won
by Chris McNamara with an overall time of 15hours 05minutes and 37seconds - an average
speed of almost 25 mph!
Entry fee £84:00
