Ras Mumhan 2007 Promoted by Killorglin Credit Union Cycling Club
April 6th to 9th (Killorglin is in the lovely Kingdom of Kerry, governed by a goat called King Puck!)

Stage 1
TLC Technology Services 4 mile Time Trial

This was a new route, heading out of Killorglin then a sharp left turn and
back round some hard roads and a short climb to the finish. Quite windy but
not cold at all. started at 6pm. Excellent ride by Chris B for 3rd place. I
was rubbish, beaten by 4 seconds by Irish woman professional, Siobhan
Dervan. She was to haunt us in the results to come as she was pretty good!

Stage 2
Garveys Supervalu Killorglin to Castleisland 95 miles

Longest stage of the race at 95 miles with 5 climbs scattered throughout.
Sunny weather, and arm warmers are soon rolled down. Typical Irish racing
start, 30+ mph until a break goes! Aggressive riding by Chris B put him in
the break of about 8 in the first 10 miles. Another 20 miles later, Toby and
Chris P sneaked into a small chasing group while I sat in the bunch with the
yellow jersey. A tough job but someone had to do it! The gap to the front
gradually grew, making Chris P the leader on the road! Toby's group split
and he went across to the front while Chris P went back to the bunch. At 70
miles, after some hard riding to keep Chris B in the front, Toby is reeled
in, and then at 75 miles the hammer went down as Paul Griffin and Brian
Kennelly ripped out of the bunch. Rory Wyley tipped me off and I managed to
go with them and we rapidly caught the front at the bottom of the second to
last climb. Chris B was suffering now and I tried to hang off the back of
the group to keep him in contention. But the hill was about 200m too long
and I had to decide to go with the group or we would both have been dropped.
The finish in Castleisland suddenly appeared a few miles later at the end of
long downhill straight! I launched my 'I hope I have an 11 sprocket' sprint
and just snatched third place on the line. Chris B hung in the bunch with
Siobhan while Chris P and Toby paid for their efforts during the stage.

Stage 3
Pauline Sugrue Property Sales Waterville to Waterville 64 miles

This stage started and finished at the small seaside town of Waterville,
renowned for famous visitors such as Charlie Chaplin and Walt Disney. But
today, the tourists were excited about the race and there was quite a buzz
around the start. Bit cool and cloudy with quite a strong wind coming off
the sea. From the off, Toby got stuck in to the early break of about 6. The
race did a loop over some inland hills before turning back to the sea for a
lap of Valencia island. Before the island, I got in a chasing move of 5
riders including a very fit Paddy Moriaty, and we set about chasing the
front. The roads all day were very dead as the Irish would say and Toby can
vouch for that as he rejoined the bunch on the island. I was still chasing
in a group of 3 and we eventually caught the front with 20 miles to go at
the top of the second to last climb. I hung on over the last climb but with
12 miles to go, Kennelly and Griffin bridged across after leaving the bunch
for dead. The next 12 miles were grim but I held on until the outskirts of
Waterville where Griffin attacked in the last 2 miles, and split the group
into 3 on the downhill(!) run to the finish.

Stage 4
Western Union Killorglin to Beaufort Loop 63 miles

Today's stage was the expected Beaufort loop starting and finishing in
Killorglin with quite a tough finishing circuit in and around the town. A
bit cool but no real sign of rain. Quite a lot of riders breathed a sigh of
relief when Siobhan didn't start, opting to travel to a race in Holland.
Someone had to be in the early break and again it was Toby. He can't help
himself but he was determined to make it stick today. Paddy Moriaty (4th on
GC) escaped the bunch with a small group in a brilliant move. They soon
caught Toby's group and Paddy was soon the leader on the road by well over a
minute! Kennelly's team tried to hold the gap until the finishing circuit
when Kennelly and Griffin started to ride very hard. Every lap featured a 90
degree corner then a 50m long 1 in 8 climb straight away to the line then
about 500m of an uphill drag then a bone shaking descent. After a couple of
laps the bunch started to fall apart as quickly as you can say "Hold the
feckin' wheeeel!". Chris P and Chris B were unlucky victims and lost a bit
of time. I held on to the shrinking bunch for grim death. Despite the team
taking bets on how much time Toby would lose he proved us all wrong when he
was in at the death with the final evil corner. Despite being one of the
first into it, he almost went into the straw bails which would have
impressed the crowd. But somehow he got round and grabbed 7th. The Surrey
League team had a complete set of top tens in every stage and the overall!
Paddy just missed out a podium GC place by one second, he really deserved
more after the ride of the race.

Thanks to Keith Butler and Chris Parlett for doing the driving. Thanks to
John Mangan for letting us stay at his house, the organisers for looking
after us so well and the people of Kerry for supporting us. Thanks to the
weather as well, we were prepared for the worst but were pleasantly
surprised! It is a nice change to ride place to place races where you don't
know what's coming up next. The whole stage race scenario is also a buzz,
with team cars, great crowds, motorbike marshals and riders ready to go from the gun. The Surrey League will be back next year and also takes teams to other races throughout the year, so if you fancy it, get in touch.
