Surrey League and the Ras Mumhan (2017)
The Rás Mumhan is one of Ireland’s premier stage races that is held over the Easter weekend (April 14th to 17th) and run by the Killorglin Credit Union Cycling Club. Comprising of 4 stages races, it passes through some of the most stunning scenery in Kerry and from the cyclists’ point of view, some of the most demanding terrain. With 4 road stages covering over 500km’s it should provide exciting and demanding racing that is typical of Rás Mumhan.
The Surrey League has strong ties with the organisers and for many years has supported the event by sending over teams to compete in this tough stage race. So with this in mind, the Surrey League are sending a team over for 2017.
The 2017 team will consist of 5 riders, a mechanic and a DS and in the words of Chris McNamara, these are “we have as our deluxe domestic Simon Mcnamara, Stan Kennett as our fast finisher, Henry Latimer as the team’s power house, with Lawrence carpenter and myself riding for GC. Supporting us will be Mark “brown” Storie as our mechanic and John Heaton Armstrong as our DS – the man giving us our orders”.
Chris also quotes “the stages are longer this year with back to back 100 mile stages on the Saturday and Sunday, very hilly profiles and a field of 220 riders. The main opposition is likely to be the Irish national U23 team along with all the top domestic Irish outfits along with teams from Germany/Holland and Italy. In all it should be a great event to ride even though it’s going to be pretty tough”.
So we wish them luck and look forward to hearing how things went when they return.
